Jane Steele started working in early childhood education more than 35 years ago as a certified Montessori teacher. After taking time to raise her six children, she has returned to her passion for teaching. Her experiences as a mom, along with her search for the healthiest developmentally appropriate path through early childhood, brought her to Waldorf education.
As the founder of the Black River Preschool Jane now brings this play-based developmental philosophy of education to central New Jersey. She is a certified Birth to Three Parent and Child Waldorf class teacher and is also a certified Waldorf teacher for three-year olds through kindergarten. Jane is currently teaching our Parent and Child class for children from birth to three as well as our kindergarten class for children turning five and six years old.

The Black River School, founded in the spring of 2015, is dedicated to offering education to children and their parents from birth through kindergarten and older.
It is our mission to educate children and families using the principles and pedagogy of Waldorf education, which began in 1923 and is still a worldwide movement of education based on the work of Rudolf Steiner.
Waldorf education offers a rich curriculum integrating academic, artistic and practical principles and strives to recognize the unique spirit of each child. Waldorf education guides children to foster self-knowledge and to meet the world by awakening within them warmth of heart, clarity of thought and strength of purpose with a rich intellectual foundation built on critical thinking.
Black River School strives to engage the wonder and curiosity of each child, thereby setting the groundwork for their intellectual potential through developmentally appropriate indoor and outdoor experiences. We offer daily and weekly rhythms that promote security, confidence, trust and instill in the child self-discipline.
